During Tuesday night’s BET Hip Hop Awards 2020, Brandy, Erykah Badu, Teyana Taylor and H.E.R. teamed up for mesmerizing all-female cypher.
The iconic quad freestyled over Brandy’s 1994 smash hit, “I Wanna Be Down.”
Badu assisted the ladies on the 1’s and 2’s as Teyana Taylor first graced the mic. “The tone is what I set it/If you want it come and get it, don’t forget it,” she raps.
H.E.R. used her bars to pay tribute to Breonna Taylor: “Black queens with dreams/Beautiful, exceptional,” she raps. “Say you wanna be down, but still ain’t arrest them, though.”
Badu also had a turn on the mic. “Look, I’m about to go in,” she raps — boxing gloves dangling over her shoulders. “I’m about to get inside these bitches heads.”
Of course, it was Brandy who killed the cypher. And let’s face it, she had to really bring it over her own beat: “Black females we gonna flourish in these conditions/Born to front lines, not in your kitchen/I’m on a mission,” she raps. “And if they say the sky is the limit, then buy a cloud/And if they can’t see us as an equal, they not allowed” before placing a crown on her beautiful crown.
