Ashanti is living proof that sometimes, destiny needs a little nudge and a backup plan. The Grammy-winning singer opened up in a heartfelt interview on The Tamron Hall Show about her journey to motherhood, revealing how freezing her eggs and unwavering faith in manifestation led to the birth of her son, Kareem, with rekindled flame Nelly.
At 43, Ashanti’s story is a testament to the evolving landscape of motherhood and the choices available to women today. She revealed that she took the step to freeze her eggs as a precautionary measure, ensuring she had options for the future. “I froze my eggs, and I was like, ‘Just in case, we will have this on stash,'” she shared.
But Ashanti didn’t stop at medical prep. She leaned into the power of manifestation, praying that the universe (or higher powers) would send her the person she was meant to be with, someone who understood her world, her ambitions, and her heart.
“I just believed that it was gonna happen,” she said, admitting she had no clue she’d end up back with Nelly. “I kept saying, ‘Just send me my person. Whoever it’s supposed to be. The right person. Just send them.’ And he sent him.”
While the number of people giving birth under 30 is steadily declining, the number of people giving birth in their 40s is rising. According to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there was a 6% rise in 2022 compared to 2021. For the first time since 2016, birth rates among women over 45 increased, with the total number of births rising by 12%.
Fans were stunned when rumors swirled about Ashanti and Nelly reconciling. The two were a beloved couple in the early 2000s, but after a high-profile breakup, it seemed like they’d gone their separate ways for good. Yet, fate had other plans.
The couple’s reconnection led to an even bigger surprise: baby Kareem. While Ashanti was fully prepared to embrace single motherhood if necessary, she ultimately found the co-parent she’d hoped for in her old flame.
It’s not lost on anyone that Ashanti had the baby at 43 years old on her own terms—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
