A Colorado woman who molested a 13-year-old child she ended up having a baby with has been sentenced to three months in jail.
Thirty-one-year-old Andrea Serrano was arrested and charged with sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust and sexual assault.
After accepting a plea deal, Serrano’s charges were reduced to incest, according to a KRDO report. The deal avoided her from having to serve 10 years to life as a sex offender.
But despite the plea deal, an El Paso County judge sentenced her to 90 days, according to the Gazette.
The mother of the boy had requested that Serrano be placed behind bars for sexually assaulting her son.
“It sets a bad example for the community…There are no consequences,” she told the judge. “This isn’t right…She needs to go to jail.”
Serrano has since apologized for her behavior.
“I just want to say I’m sorry,” Serrano said.
According to Fountain Police, investigators began looking into the case after receiving a report of “sexual assault on a 13-year-old child.”
“Through further investigation, detectives learned 31-year-old Andrea Serrano was having a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old juvenile male,” the police department wrote in a press release.
She was later arrested “after confirming the relationship” with the teenager.
According to the US Department of Justice, “an estimated 91% of victims of rape & sexual assault are female and 9% are male. Nearly 99% of perpetrators are male,” adding that “around the world, at least 1 woman in every 3 has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime. Most often the abuser is a member of her own family or is her partner” and “only 2% of rapists are convicted and imprisoned.”
