Kerry Washington’s clever trick to keep her engagement to former NFL player Nnamdi Asomugha under wraps was motivated by their decision to “protect” themselves from “public energy.

During an appearance on SiriusXM’s This Life of Mine with James Corden, Kerry Washington opened up about why she chose to keep her relationship private

Referencing her former engagement to actor David Moscow, the ‘Scandal Star’ recollected how healing from their breakup was very painful.

According to Kerry Washington, the public constantly reminded her after she left the two-year relationship.

“I think it’s really hard when people have a lot to say about your relationship, and I had been in a really public engagement that when it ended, I was in the unfortunate position of being on the cover of a bridal magazine and it was a bridal magazine that came out quarterly, so for three months I walked around, and I thought, ‘I think I’m done talking about my personal life in the public.'”

Speaking about her husband and how they maintained secrecy, the American actress revealed the lengths she went to to hide her engagement.

“I used to pin my engagement ring to my undergarments because I loved my ring so much. So, I would sleep in it at night, and then in the morning, I would pin it to my undergarments so that nobody knew we were engaged.”

She pointed out that the most significant items in her life were a group of seashells she gathered during her and Nnamdi Asomugha’s honeymoon in Zanzibar.

Kerry Washington described her honeymoon as “the happiest two weeks of my life,” detailing how the collection of seashells reminded her of the sacredness of her marriage

“You know, having this sort of very private, secretive wedding and then just jumping off into this very remote place to really begin our lives together,” she continued. “I love that. I love that jar. It always makes me feel so grateful for the life that I have”.

Kerry Washington and Nnamdi Asomugha privately tied the knot in 2013 and have since welcomed two children.
