25-Year-Old Cold Case Solved! Killer of Bronx Teen Minnie Soriano Nabbed After DNA Breakthrough

A decades-old murder case that haunted a New York community has finally been resolved, as the man responsible for the killing of 13-year-old Minnie Soriano has been sentenced more than 25 years after the crime.

Minnie Soriano, a Bronx middle school student, was reported missing in February 1999 after leaving school. Four days later, her body was discovered in a garbage bag inside a dumpster.

Authorities determined she had been strangled to death. The case shocked the local community and remained unsolved for years despite extensive investigation.

At the time, forensic testing recovered DNA evidence from the scene. However, limitations in technology prevented investigators from identifying a suspect. The case eventually went cold.

Years later, advances in DNA analysis — particularly the use of partial matching techniques — allowed investigators to revisit the evidence. Detectives identified a familial DNA link connected to a Bronx man who had previously been arrested. This breakthrough narrowed the suspect pool to several male relatives.

In 2021, investigators employed covert DNA collection methods to obtain a sample from Joseph “Jupiter Joe” Martinez, a resident of the same apartment building where Soriano had lived. Laboratory testing confirmed a match between Martinez’s DNA and the evidence recovered from the crime scene.

Martinez, who was 27 at the time of the murder, had no prior criminal record and was known in the community for his interest in astronomy and public outreach. Despite his denial of involvement, prosecutors relied heavily on the DNA evidence to build their case.

Following a lengthy legal process, a court found Martinez guilty. He has now been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. At 54 years old, he is expected to spend the remainder of his life incarcerated.

The case highlights the growing role of forensic science in resolving cold cases, particularly the use of familial DNA searching — a method that has raised both legal and ethical questions but has proven effective in identifying suspects years after crimes were committed.

For Soriano’s family, the sentencing brings a measure of long-awaited closure after more than two decades of uncertainty.
