The Louisville community is reeling after the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Jermia Offutt, who was four months pregnant with a baby boy.
Offutt was gunned down Wednesday night, Aug. 13, 2025, in the city’s Chickasaw neighborhood, leaving behind three young children who tragically witnessed the attack.
Louisville Metro Police said they responded around 9 p.m. to the 4100 block of West Broadway, where they found Offutt suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to a hospital but did not survive. Police confirmed that no arrests have been made, and the LMPD Homicide Unit is leading the investigation.
They Killed My Daughter, My Grandson
Offutt’s mother, Angie Davis, expressed her anguish in an interview with WLKY.
“Somebody, please help us. Help me, help my daughter, help my grandbabies to know who did this to they mama,” Davis pleaded. “They not only killed my daughter, but they killed my grandson.”
Family members said Offutt’s three children—who witnessed their mother’s death—are now left without their mom.
“My niece was a loving person,” her uncle said through tears. “You don’t know what you took—not only from me, but from her friends, her kids, everybody. If you only knew who she was.”
Community Demands Justice
The killing has intensified outrage in west Louisville, where residents and community leaders are grappling with a string of recent shootings.
Community activist Rhonda Mathis highlighted the broader crisis of violence against women and mothers:
“I’m angry because a mother walking her child to the bus stop in broad daylight is murdered. Say her name: Shonda Williams. I’m angry because a pregnant mother murdered inside the store. Double homicide. Mother and child. Say her name: Jermia Offutt.”
