A 60-year-old grandmother who was run over by her own car has died at the hands of a 12-year-old, who has now been charged in connection with her death.
The boy, whose name has not been released due to his age, is accused of running over Marcia Grant, 60, in a London suburb last Wednesday.
According to police documents, the boy acknowledged that he understood what he was being charged for during a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court Tuesday. Wearing a light-brown tracksuit, he was asked to confirm his name before a judge explained what he had done and the consequences of his actions should he be convicted.
According to a Sky News report, “the Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Jeremy Richardson KC, said the case had to be prioritized due to the age of the defendant and he fixed a provisional trial date for August 14, with a fallback date of October 3.”
The boy has been charged with killing Grant in addition to possession of a knife-life weapon, which officers found on him when they were called to the scene of the crime. He is currently being detained at a youth detention center until his next hearing. Attorneys Ian Goldsack and Ben Campbell have been named as part of the legal team defending the boy.
“Marcia was a warm, loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend and a pillar of her community. Her loss has already sent shockwaves through all who knew her or was lucky enough to be included in her orbit,” Grant’s family wrote in a statement.
The defendant becomes one of the youngest minors to be prosecuted for murder in the United Kingdom in about 30 years.
In another Britain case, a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old were convicted of killing a woman while recording it on Snapchat. They were sentenced to 15 years in prison.
