In a remarkable achievement, Angerline Day, a 79-year-old woman from Montgomery, Alabama, has earned her bachelor’s degree after four years of dedicated study.
“I don’t give myself any expiration dates on anything,” Day shared with WITN, encapsulating her indefatigable spirit.
After retiring from her long-term job at JCPenney, Day refused to let retirement mark the end of her educational aspirations.
Driven by a lifelong passion for learning and a desire to contribute to her community, she embarked on an academic journey that had been deferred for decades.
Day had initially enrolled at Alabama State University with dreams of studying psychology but was forced to drop out due to financial difficulties.
With the unwavering support of her sons, she finally had the chance to fulfill her dream.
Recalling the moment her son proposed an unconventional gift, Day said:
“He said ‘Well, mom, I’m not going to give you a Christmas present. I’m not going to give you a birthday present, so how about I send you back to school?’”
For the past four years, Day committed herself to her studies, often working from her bedroom. Despite facing technological challenges, her determination never wavered.
“I love to read. That’s not a problem, I’ll do the assignment but now, I’m supposed to put it in this computer. How in the hell am I going to do that?” she recounted, reflecting on the hurdles she overcame.
There were moments of doubt, but Day’s resolve remained firm.
“The feeling of failure kicked in, and I must do this for myself. This is the last opportunity. I’m going to do this,” she affirmed.
Her perseverance culminated in a proud moment as she received her diploma from Troy University. Day hopes her story will inspire others, especially those who feel their time has passed or who face difficulties envisioning a promising future.
“Life is there because I’m probably close to the end… and I have to grab it as much as I possibly can while I can,” Day said, embodying the spirit of lifelong learning and resilience.
