Grammy-winning singer Lauryn Hill is once again dealing with tax issues, as new records show the legendary artist currently owes nearly $900,000 in state tax liens. The development comes years after her widely publicized federal tax case and follows the cancellation of a planned Fugees reunion tour that reportedly disrupted the project’s cash flow.

According to records from the New Jersey Division of Taxation, two active tax liens have been filed against Ms. Hill. One lien lists an unpaid balance of $133,246, while a second lien totals $758,912.02. Combined, the two liabilities bring the amount owed to just under $900,000.

Ms. Hill’s team confirmed that the singer is actively addressing the situation. In a statement, her spokesperson said Hill is currently following a repayment plan arranged with the State of New Jersey.

“Ms. Hill is complying with a repayment plan she entered into with the State of New Jersey to resolve state income tax liabilities incurred after cancellation of a tour, which greatly impacted the tour’s cash flow,” the spokesperson said.

The financial strain appears to be tied to the planned 2024 reunion tour featuring Ms. Hill and the Fugees. The highly anticipated tour was canceled shortly before its first scheduled performance, disrupting revenue that had been expected from the run of shows.

The recent tax development also revisits a difficult chapter from more than a decade ago when Ms. Hill faced federal charges related to her finances. In 2012, the singer pleaded guilty to three counts of tax evasion after authorities said she failed to file tax returns on $1.8 million in earnings between 2005 and 2007.

Ms. Hill later served time in federal custody following the case and was released in October 2013.

Now, more than ten years after that legal battle, the singer’s team says she is working through the current state tax obligations under an agreed repayment plan while addressing the financial impact connected to the canceled tour.
