On Tuesday, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez condemned the U.S. system that allowed President Donald Trump to slide on his taxes.
“The nerve of people who ask ‘how are you going to pay for it?’ whenever we propose building advanced public education, healthcare, & climate infrastructure yet defend a system where Trump pays $750 in taxes and Amazon pays none is beyond me,” Ocasio-Cortez said on Twitter.
Last week, a New York Times article revealed that the billionaire businessman-turned-president paid just $750 for the year 2016. The report also revealed that Trump failed to pay taxes for 11 out of the 15 years the publication examined.
Trump has refused to present his tax returns since before the 2016 presidential election and in the subsequent years. He claimed he was under audit by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The Times claims Trump owes in excess of $72 million.
In other news, Democratic nominee Joe Biden distanced himself from AOC’s multitrillion-dollar Green New Deal, her signature legislative proposal.
“The Green New Deal is not my plan,” Biden said during Tuesday night’s first presidential debate in Cleveland. “No, I don’t support the Green New Deal,” Biden insisted. “I support the Biden plan I put forward, which is different than what [Trump] calls the Green New Deal.”
Ocasio-Cortez followed up with a rapid response.
“This isn’t news, Kellyanne,” the New York Democrat wrote. “Our differences are exactly why I joined Biden’s Climate Unity Task Force – so we could set aside our differences & figure out an aggressive climate plan to address the planetary crisis at our feet,” she tweeted. “Trump doesn’t even believe climate change is real,” she added.
