“She has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year. So, even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work,” Jay Z (GRAMMYs, 2024).
Jay Z made three historic moments last night: The first time he took his daughter Blue Ivy on stage to receive an award, received the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award and called out the Recording Academy for never having given his wife, Beyoncé, the ultimate award despite her numerous Grammy Awards.
On Sunday night while receiving the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award for contributing to the music industry, Jay Z pulled a ‘Kanye’ on unsuspecting academy members, colleagues, and guests.
The 54-year-old used his acceptance speech to complain that his wife Beyonce, with 32 other Grammy wins, had never won Album of the Year.
“Obviously, it’s subjective because you know it’s music and it’s opinion-based. I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than anyone and never won Album of the Year,” the Brooklyn-born rapper began.
“She has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year,” Jay Z continued. “So even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work. Think about that. Most Grammys never won Album of the Year. That doesn’t work.”
But Jay Z didn’t end there, he went in hard, spitting some honesty and getting an audible reaction from the crowd.
“Some of you are going to go home tonight and feel like you’ve been robbed. Some of you may get robbed. Some of you don’t belong in a category. You know when I get nervous, I tell the truth,”
“But outside of that, we got to keep showing up. Keep showing up until they give you all those accolades you feel you deserve,” Jay Z ended.
