‘Bridgerton’ Star Golda Rosheuvel Says Lesbian Director Advised Her to Stay in the Closet: ‘I Would Rather Lose a Job Than Not Be True to Who I Am’

“Bridgerton” star Golda Rosheuvel currently stars as Queen Charlotte in the Netflix hit series.

Rosheuvel, who is openly gay, shared in a recent interview that she was once warned against coming out of the closet.

On a recent episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast, she shared that the advice came from a Lesbian director.

“We were talking about being out and proud and representation and whether I should say I was gay in interviews,” she said. “And it was an absolute no. ‘You absolutely shouldn’t do that. It could or it would ruin your career as an actor,'” the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominee added.

The director was also openly gay, which further surprised Rosheuvel.

“I would rather lose a job than not be true to who I am. I’d rather not work in an industry that doesn’t accept me. …It just wasn’t how I was raised. And then her being out as a female director, as a lesbian director, I was like, ‘I don’t understand this advice.’ It blew my mind. “Love is love,” she said to host Marc Malkin. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s between a man and a woman when you are an actor creating a character.”

According to LGBT media advocacy group GLAAD, nearly 12% of regular characters who are LGBT, up 2.8% from last year.

Last year, Netflix announced that a new “Bridgerton” spinoff, centering on the adventures of a young Queen Charlotte, had been ordered to series.

Fans fell in love with the limited series, which aired over the 2020 Christmas holiday, but Queen Charlotte’s formidable character (played by Golda Rosheuvel) intrigued viewers… and Netflix is listening to the fans and giving us more of her.

“As we continue to expand the world of Bridgerton, we now have the opportunity to devote even more of the Shondaland fold to the Bridgerton-verse,” says CEO of Shondaland, Shonda Rhimes.

“We’ve worked with Jess Brownell for over a decade and have long wanted to find the right project to place in her hands. When it came time to pass the baton, I knew this unique voice was vital to the future of the show.” Betsy Beers added, “Chris has been part of the Shondaland team for his entire entertainment career, and Shonda and I are very proud of all he contributed to help create this series for fans around the globe.”
