Brookville High School junior Kaelen Tucker’s track season came to a shocking and painful halt during the 4x200m relay final at Liberty University when she was struck on the back of the head by an opponent’s baton.
The incident resulted in the immediate disqualification of I.C. Norcom High School’s relay team for contact interference.
Tucker, who had already made headlines by setting a new meet record in the 55-meter dash at the Class 3 state finals, was in the middle of a crucial race when she attempted to pass a Norcom runner.
As she surged forward, she was unexpectedly struck with the metal baton, causing her to stumble off the track, clutching her head.
“I still can’t believe it happened,” Tucker said, expressing her disbelief at the incident.
Her mother, Tamara Tucker, along with on-site medical personnel, rushed to her side to assist. Kaelen is now dealing with the effects of a concussion and a possible skull fracture as a result of the blow.
The Virginia High School League (VHSL) has confirmed it is investigating the incident. Tamara Tucker spoke to VHSL officials and ABC 13 reported that inquiries into the matter are ongoing.
While both the parents of the opposing runner and I.C. Norcom’s athletic director have since issued apologies on behalf of the student, no apology was extended on the day of the event.
Tucker and her family are left with lingering questions. “Why did you do it and why haven’t you apologized yet?” she asked.
Despite the setback, Tucker remains optimistic about her recovery and has set her sights on returning for the outdoor track season.
