Cindy Ngamba, the Cameroon-born boxer who made history at the 2024 Paris Olympics by winning bronze in the women’s middleweight division, is preparing for her professional boxing debut in 2025.
Ngamba’s journey has been one of resilience, dedication, and faith, culminating in her becoming the first member of the refugee team to ever stand on the Olympic podium.
Ngamba’s story began in Douala, Cameroon, where she spent her early childhood before moving to the UK at age 11.
It was in England that Ngamba discovered boxing, a sport that would shape her future and lead her to become a three-time national champion.
However, it was not until 2022, after publicly coming out as gay, that Ngamba was granted refugee status in the UK. In Cameroon, homosexuality is illegal, and Ngamba’s open identity put her at risk of imprisonment.
Despite the adversities she faced, Ngamba’s focus on boxing and her faith propelled her forward. In her interview with Telegraph Sport, she reflected on how her faith as a Christian continues to ground her in her daily life.
“If I could switch lives with anyone in the world for a day, it would be God. My faith is so important to me,” she shared in an interview with Telegraph Sport.
Her Olympic achievement was a turning point in her career and personal life. When asked about the most meaningful compliment she received, Ngamba said, “Being called a history-maker when I won bronze at the Paris Olympics. Nothing will ever come close to topping that.” This historic win made her a trailblazer for the refugee team and cemented her legacy as a fighter who overcame immense odds.
Looking back, Ngamba fondly recalled her childhood memories of growing up in Cameroon, particularly the beach barbecues she shared with her family. She disclosed that every Sunday, her mother would take her and her brother swimming, followed by a barbecue grilling fish and chicken. These moments remain some of her happiest memories.
When it comes to her favorite food, Ngamba proudly shares her love for ndolé, a Cameroonian dish made from bitter leaves, nuts, and fish or beef. However, as a proud Brit, she also enjoys apple crumble with custard, which she calls a true British comfort food.
As Ngamba prepares for her professional boxing debut, she remains focused on the next steps in her career. Her dedication to the sport is unwavering, and she credits her work ethic as a key factor in her success.
“I’m a workaholic,” she admits. “Training is like an addiction, but I guess it’s a good habit to have because without that mindset, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
Ngamba’s journey has also been shaped by advice from fellow British boxer Natasha Jonas, who encouraged her to make decisions rationally and without emotion.
“Take emotion out of decision-making and try to be rational about it,” Jonas told her, a piece of wisdom that Ngamba carries with her today.
In addition to boxing, Ngamba is also passionate about public speaking. She hopes to share her life story, particularly her experiences as a refugee and her journey to becoming an Olympic medalist, to inspire others. Her future is bright, and with her faith and work ethic, Cindy Ngamba is ready to make her mark on the world stage once again!
