Dany Garcia and her business partner Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson teamed up with Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Capital to purchase the XFL for $15 million,
The move makes Garcia, the former wife of Johnson, the only female owner in the football league.
“For Dwayne, Gerry and myself, this property represents an incredible opportunity. It is the confluence of great passion, tradition and possibility,” said Garcia per The Bleacher Report. “Sports and entertainment are the foundations of the businesses I have built. Melding our expertise combined with our commitment to deliver exciting and inspiring unique content, has us all focused on developing the XFL brand into a multi-media experience that our athletes, partners and fans will proudly embrace and love.”
The announcement included no information about whether the trio is a planned to relaunch the league — but the assumption is that they will.
The league was initially launched by Vince McMahon but became available when McMahon filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this year after the league was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Garcia also serves as the manager for her Hollywood ex. During an interview with Marie Claire back in 2018, she opened up about their working relationship.
“Some people go through separation and there’s no conversation, and it’s a dark time, and one person goes off, but that was never us. We went on this journey together. We were going to change the manner of the relationship together. We spoke every day, and multiple times a day — not only on business, but on what was happening personally.”
