A former teacher at Donda Academy has come out to speak about the deprivation she and her students faced while at the California-based school founded by rapper Kanye West.
According to Cecilia Hailey, students at the school have not been given the “education they deserve” but advised that removing them from the school and placing them elsewhere may not rectify the problem, according to a TMZ report.
The news outlet previously reported that Hailey and her daughter were fired from the institution for calling out imperfections within the school’s framework, citing that race was a factor.
Hailey did admit that while West may not be directly involved with the school’s administration, the facility faced many issues, including limited chairs for students, locked front doors and no lesson plans. She also stated that students were only fed sushi for lunch and the school’s curriculum avoided teaching topics like the Holocaust and Black History Month. She is currently suing the school for wrongful termination.
According to Donda Academy’s website, the institution’s “project-based learning model allows students to guide instruction based on their interests and skills. We promote ideation, prototyping, and real-world implementation.
Donda students grow in their faith and community through daily all-school worship and celebration at Sunday Service,” adding that its mission is to use an ethic of integrity and care, Donda Academy prepares students to become the next generation of leaders, thinkers and innovators by providing them with a world-class education that includes a rigorous core curriculum, and an emphasis on sustainability, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving.”
Furthermore, its staff “believes that each scholar deserves an innovative and personalized education. Our experienced educators have an uncompromised passion for creating lifelong learners and Christ-followers. We work to engage and educate the whole student – mind, body, and spirit.”
