Saweetie returned to her alma mater, San Diego State University, for Homecoming. The “Icy Girl” took the stage alongside the university’s renowned dance team, The Diamonds, and delivered an energetic performance that had the audience cheering.
Saweetie, whose real name is Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper, graduated from San Diego State University (SDSU) before becoming famous. She attended SDSU as a business major and was also a member of the university’s dance team, The Diamonds.
While she started her college career at San Diego State, Saweetie eventually graduated from USC with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications in 2016.
During an appearance on The Zach Sang Show earlier this year, the rapper discussed her experiences at both institutions.
“College taught me how to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations,” Saweetie shared. “I went to two really prestigious universities, San Diego State, then transferred to USC. And a lot of those rooms, sometimes I’d be the only woman of color.”
She continued, “It’s really intimidating when you’re around kids who’ve been put through private schools, who’ve had tutoring, who are very affluent, who are very already well educated, and they’re just doing this because I don’t know if it’s because the legacy or it’s just part of like what their family does. Not only did I go to these schools, but I’m also a first-generation student. I didn’t have anyone to like mentor me. I had no guidance.”
The “NaNi” singer relived her college days with a special homecoming performance alongside the dance team at her alma mater, San Diego State University.
In a video posted to Instagram by 21Ninety on Sunday (October 27), Saweetie can be seen leading the SDSU Diamonds in a performance of her 2019 hit single “My Type.”
In the clip, Saweetie stands alongside San Diego State University (SDSU) dance team members, The Diamonds. She and the dancers are dressed in matching black outfits featuring sheer long sleeves and sparkly detailing across the chest, giving the look a sleek and glamorous vibe.
The dance team members around her are smiling, appearing excited and energized, while SDSU fans fill the stadium seats in the background, dressed in red and black SDSU colors.
The Bay Area native also shared the video on X (formerly Twtitter) with the caption, “SDSU homecoming with my diamond sisters,” with a halo emoji, diamond emoji, and 3-star emoji.
The reunion with SDSU wasn’t just a win for Saweetie but also for The Diamonds, who reveled in the opportunity to share the spotlight with a major recording artist.
