In a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live, Vice President Kamala Harris joined former cast member Maya Rudolph, who famously portrays her on the show, for a hilarious cold-open sketch that left both women in fits of laughter.
Just days before the U.S. presidential election, the duo brought humor and camaraderie to the Nov. 2 episode, riffing off each other’s playful energy.
The sketch opened with Rudolph’s version of Harris, giving herself a pep talk backstage at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, a pivotal swing state in the election.
“I wish I could talk to someone who’s been in my shoes, a Black, South Asian woman running for president, preferably from the Bay Area,” said Rudolph’s Harris into a mirror.
Moments later, the real Harris, dressed in an identical dark pantsuit, appeared on the other side of the mirror, surprising Rudolph’s character — and the cheering audience.
“You and me both, sister,” Harris replied, prompting the two to burst into laughter, setting a lively tone for the rest of the sketch.
As the real Harris offered encouragement, she couldn’t resist poking fun at her opponent’s recent viral moment.
“You can do something your opponent cannot do: You can open doors,” she said, referencing former President Donald Trump’s struggle to open a garbage truck door earlier in the week. Rudolph’s Harris responded with her signature laugh, leading Harris to ask, “I don’t really laugh like that, do I?” to which Rudolph replied, “A little bit.”
The pair then riffed on Harris’ affectionate nickname, “Momala,” with Rudolph quipping:
Now, Kamala, talk my palmala,” extending her hand. Together, they pledged to win the election to end the “dramala” in the U.S. and enjoy some “pajamalas” while watching a “rom-comala.”
With their arms around each other, Rudolph’s Harris declared, “I’m going to vote for us!” — to which the real Harris asked with a grin, “Any chance you are registered in Pennsylvania?” Rudolph admitted she wasn’t, but both shrugged it off before delivering the iconic SNL tagline, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!”
Following the sketch, fans flooded social media with praise, sharing their excitement over the “Kamala and Kamala” moment.
“That skit was the bombala!” wrote one fan on YouTube, while another pointed out how Rudolph mimicked Harris’s gestures, “like an actual reflection.”
Behind the scenes, Harris and Rudolph continued their fun, even lip-synching to the song:
“We Are Not the Same Person” in a backstage video shared by SNL on Instagram.
The memorable cameo gave fans a lighthearted moment as election tensions mounted, showcasing the humor and warmth Harris brought to the SNL stage with Rudolph by her side.
