Vice President Kamala Harris expressed her strong condemnation of political violence on Sunday following reports of an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.
The incident occurred near Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course in Florida, where Secret Service agents opened fire on a suspect carrying an AK-style rifle.
In a statement from her office, Harris said:
“I am deeply disturbed by this possible asassination attempt. As we gather the facts, I will be clear: I condemn political violence. We all must do our part to ensure that this incident does not lead to more violence.”
Federal Investigation Underway
Authorities are treating the event as an assassination attempt, marking the second time in two months Trump’s life has been targeted.
Secret Service agents acted quickly, neutralizing the threat, and a suspect is now in custody.
Both Harris and President Joe Biden were briefed on the situation shortly after it unfolded.
Harris Commends Law Enforcement
Vice President Harris also commended the Secret Service and law enforcement for their vigilance.
“I am thankful that former President Trump is safe. I commend the U.S. Secret Service and law enforcement partners for their vigilance,” she said. “Our administration will ensure the Secret Service has every resource, capability, and protective measure necessary to carry out its critical mission.”
President Biden’s Response
President Biden echoed Harris’ remarks in his own statement, emphasizing the ongoing investigation.
“There is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country,” Biden said.
He assured that the Secret Service would be fully supported in its efforts to maintain security around the former president.
As the investigation continues, the administration remains focused on addressing political violence and ensuring the safety of all public officials.
