When Lupita Nyong’o set out to create Mind Your Own, her podcast about the global African experience, she probably didn’t imagine it would take her to the heart of Times Square.
But there it was: a huge billboard showcasing her podcast, making her dream a dazzling reality in one of the world’s most iconic spots. And her emotional reaction? Pure joy.
Lupita took to Instagram, teary-eyed, standing in front of her larger-than-life image with a friend recording the special moment.
“Mommy, we made it!” she exclaimed, unable to hold back her tears. It was a surreal scene as Lupita laughed and expressed disbelief at the milestone she never thought she’d reach.
With a mix of laughter, tears, and genuine awe, she invited viewers to join her on this journey through Mind Your Own, her storytelling podcast backed by Amazon Music and produced by Snap Studios at KQED.
“I don’t think I would have ever imagined this. Having a billboard in Times Square with a project that I dreamed of,” she said fighting back tears.
Mind Your Own explores what it means to belong, especially for Africans spread across the globe. Lupita, who was born in Mexico, raised in Kenya, and now resides in the United States, draws from her own journey to uncover the tales of others creating new lives and homes.
Each episode invites listeners into a world of diverse experiences, touching on themes of identity, love, and resilience—all seen through an African lens.
For Lupita, this Times Square billboard symbolizes a career achievement and a personal victory! It is more catchy phrases and art in huge lights but a celebration of the richness of African stories on a grand stage.
And her fans? They’re all invited to listen, laugh, and maybe even shed a tear with her.
