“Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Shamea Morton recently sat down with The Breakfast Club and made some eyebrow-raising comments about dating African men.

While reminiscing about her 11-year relationship with her Kenyan husband, Gerald Mwangi, whom she married in 2017, Shamea declared, “I had my African before it was cool to have an African.” Now, while she went on to discuss the negative reactions she faced early in her relationship, some fans can’t help but wonder if there’s a little dig aimed at her former BFF, Porsha Williams, whose ex-husband, also African, is currently in ICE detention. Ouch!

Shamea recounted the nasty comments and even lost friendships over her relationship with Gerald back in the day. “I even had people going ugly about it. ‘Better get him tested. Better make sure he doesn’t have AIDS.’ It was nasty work,” she revealed. Then, she pointed out the shift in perception, noting, “And then there was this new wave of being with an African. And then it was glorified. I’m like, ‘Hold on, cause when I got my husband, you were being mean about it.'”

However, the timing of these comments has raised a few perfectly sculpted eyebrows in the Housewives universe. As we all know, Porsha’s relationship with her ex-husband, Simon Guobadia, who is of Nigerian descent, has been a hot topic, especially with his recent issues leading to ICE detention. Given the well-documented and increasingly sour turn in Shamea and Porsha’s longtime friendship, some fans are interpreting Shamea’s “before it was cool” remark as a subtle, or not-so-subtle, jab at Porsha’s past relationship.

For those who’ve been keeping up with the Atlanta peaches, you know that Shamea and Porsha’s decades-long friendship has hit a seriously rough patch. With Shamea finally holding a full-time peach in Season 16, the dynamics have shifted, and not necessarily for the better. On “The Real Housewives of Atlanta After Show,” Shamea got visibly emotional discussing the growing division in their relationship and the fact that they’re “not really speaking” anymore.

Tearfully, Shamea admitted to being hurt by the negative messages she’s received from viewers who seemingly picked up on the tension between her and Porsha. She even mentioned castmates like Angela Oakley, Brit Eady, and Drew Sidora, who had accused Porsha of not being a supportive friend to Shamea. According to them, Porsha didn’t have Shamea’s back the way she expected.

Shamea, however, insisted that she had always been supportive of Porsha, recalling instances like promoting Porsha’s song “Flatline” and even inviting her to sing the national anthem at sporting events.

So, the breakdown of this once seemingly unbreakable bond has been a tough pill for Shamea to swallow, and perhaps these recent comments are a reflection of that lingering hurt and frustration. Or not?
