In a sport historically dominated by men, Samantha Nyikadzino is breaking barriers as a Design Engineer for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team.
The Zimbabwean-born engineer recently gained widespread recognition after a photo of her alongside seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton, both in their work gear at a racing arena, went viral.
The powerful image posted by @ThBishGossip sparked a wave of congratulatory messages, with many celebrating her presence in the elite motorsport industry as well as her exceptional qualifications.
Nyikadzino’s journey to Formula 1 is nothing short of inspiring!
She earned her electrical engineering degree at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Zimbabwe before advancing her studies in South Africa.
She later pursued a third degree in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of South Africa. Her remarkable academic achievements and engineering expertise positioned her among the brightest minds in motorsports engineering.
When Nyikadzino first announced her role at Mercedes-AMG Petronas in 2022, she expressed her excitement on social media, stating:
“Today was an awesome day. Started as a Design Engineer for @MercedesAMGF1 and I’m pretty geeked!”
Her journey mirrors the growing diversity in Formula 1, where more African engineers, including South African Shau Mafuna and Zimbabwean-born Stephanie Travers, are making their mark in the industry.
Her rise in motorsports engineering demonstrates her perseverance and dedication, challenging long-standing narratives about Black women in STEM. While some comments on the viral photo focused on her race, many emphasized the importance of recognizing her qualifications first and foremost.
