Spelman Alumna Takes Helm as Interim President Following Dr. Helene Gayle’s Departure

Spelman College is once again embracing Black woman excellence with the appointment of Rosalind “Roz” Brewer as its interim president.

Brewer, a distinguished Spelman alumna and former CEO of Walgreens Boots Alliance, has made history throughout her career, and her return to lead her alma mater reflects her unwavering commitment to empowering the next generation of Black women leaders.

Brewer, previously the only Black woman to hold a C-suite position within the S&P 500, brings a wealth of corporate leadership experience.

Her impressive résumé includes roles as COO of Starbucks and CEO of Sam’s Club, where she broke barriers as the third Black woman to lead a Fortune 500 company.

Now, she steps into a pivotal role at Spelman College, following Dr. Helene D. Gayle’s personal leave of absence.

Brewer’s connection to Spelman runs deep. After serving 12 years on its board, her new role as interim president allows her to continue shaping the future of the Historically Black College and University (HBCU).

Known for her strong leadership and dedication to advancing Black women in business and beyond, Brewer shared her focus for Spelman’s future:

“Through this transition, my focus is on guiding Spelman forward by supporting leadership, maintaining stability, and ensuring we continue to meet the needs of our students.”

Spelman remains a beacon of Black excellence, and Brewer’s appointment signals a seamless continuation of the school’s legacy of cultivating trailblazing leaders.
