Tami Roman is back on our television screens as part of MTV’s “The Real World Homecoming: Los Angeles,” and she was shocked to witness several of her white castmates use the “n-word” when recalling some of their racial experiences.
Roman asked Irene Berrera-Kearns about her experience with the Black Lives Matter protests the unarmed Black man, George Floyd, was murdered by then-police officer Derek Chauvin.
“I saw things when I was in the force that I can’t forgive, and I’ve marched for Black lives, but also I support the good cops I worked with, because it’s a hard job that the bad cops are making harder.”
Conservative Jon Brennan then opened his mouth… and left his peers shocked.
“OK, I live in the south, y’all. I live in Alabama. Do you know who’s in my house right now? Young, Black-colored people that I’m minister to and I’m a father figure.”
Roman then told Brennan not to use the term “Black colored.” “Well, they don’t mind. They call themselves words I won’t repeat,” he said.
Glen Naessens then told Roman he didn’t see color and added that his friend was called “a n*gger” and that he was called one too.
“The first time I really felt what you’re passionate about was when I was with my friend John, and I went to a pizza place, right? And they called him a n*gger,” hhe said unashamedly.
“You don’t say that,” says Roman. “I’m saying that you can say he was called the N-word,” she explained. Adding, “You don’t understand that the word shouldn’t come out of your white-a— mouth.”
Roman quickly told Naessens he should never use the word. Berrera-Kearns shouted at Naessens but also used the word.
“You have no idea what it is to be a n*gger,” she yells.
Roman says it’s not her job to educate her white peers. They should know better.
“I’m annoyed,” Roman says in a confessional. “It is not my job to educate you how to understand equality, how to respect another human being, that is not my job.”
