The news was shared on Facebook by Douglas’ cousin, Angie Tee.
“A beautiful and talented actress made her transition today. She warmed our hearts on movie screens and television sets all over the world. This beautiful soul was my cousin,” Angie wrote.
She continued: “I can remember growing up, there weren’t very many Black actresses who had starring roles but there was my cousin with the lead role in Tap starring alongside great dancers such as Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis Jr. She also performed with Angela Bassett and Whoopi Goldberg in How Stella Got Her Groove Back. The Inkwell, Jason’s Lyric and so much more the list goes on. The world will miss your talent but your soul will live on forever Rest in Paradise my beautiful cousin Suzzane you will be missed RIP.”
The actress’s credits also included the Lifetime biographical movie “Whitney” and the movies “How Stella Got Her Groove Back,” “The Inkwell,” “Jason’s Lyric,” and “School of Rock .”
During an interview with The Baltimore Sun, Douglas highlighted the issues women in power face compared to their male counterparts.
“In 2017, we are still dealing with women’s issues,” she said. “In our recent election, so much emphasis was placed on Hillary Clinton’s emails, but Donald Trump did not rent to Black people, admitted to not paying taxes, and did other deplorable things, and still became our President,” she said at the time.
“There is a double standard, which says that it is okay for a man to be reckless but if women does the same thing, she is labeled.”
