‘We’re Losing Doctors’: Psychiatry Resident Says Job Offer Pulled After Budget Cuts, Urges Public To ‘Get Political’

by Gee NY

A psychiatry resident who goes by Dr. Claire, MD online is sounding the alarm after losing a job offer she says was rescinded due to sweeping state and federal budget cuts.

In a viral Instagram post shared with her 140,000+ followers on her page, @drclaireomd, she warns that the healthcare system is being quietly gutted — and that more physicians are being affected than the public realizes.

“I lost my job offer this week as a doctor due to recent state and federal budget cuts,” Dr. Claire says in a video clip that has garnered thousands of views in less than 24 hours. “And I’ve had several other doctors reach out to me saying the same thing happened to them.”

While she did not name the hospital or health system involved, Dr. Claire said she felt compelled to share her experience to raise awareness of the political forces driving change in the U.S. medical landscape.

“I’m not posting this to create panic, but everything we do is political,” she said. “Politics affect us all.”

According to Dr. Claire, her post isn’t just about job security — it’s a wake-up call. She emphasized that medical professionals are seeing real consequences as a result of decisions being made at the state and federal level.

“If you’re a person who’s not political, this is maybe your sign to get political — because we are losing doctors,” she urged.

Dr. Claire ended her message with solidarity for others going through similar setbacks and a cautious warning about what’s to come.

“We’ll be okay,” she said. “But we’re just headed to scary times.”

The post arrives amid reports of ongoing budget cuts to public health programs and residency funding, particularly in states where Medicaid expansion and graduate medical education programs are facing renewed scrutiny or reduced financial support.

National health organizations have previously warned that physician shortages could worsen in coming years without adequate investments in training and hiring.

At a time when the U.S. is already grappling with mental health provider shortages, particularly in psychiatry, Dr. Claire’s experience underscores the fragile intersection between politics, healthcare, and public well-being.
