Lisette Scott, founder and owner of the New York-based jewelry brand Jam+Rico, reflects on how her entrepreneurial journey has evolved since its inception in 2016.

With a passion for both culture and community, Lisette’s work has made waves in the fashion and jewelry world. From a $500 investment and a corporate job to becoming a six-figure brand, her story is one of resilience, creativity, and connection to her Caribbean roots.

In a recent interview with Her Agenda, Lisette revealed that her journey into full-time entrepreneurship was not driven by the desire for corporate ascension. Instead, it was rooted in a deep yearning for creative freedom and the opportunity to represent her unique identity as a Caribbean-American woman.

“I was just like, ‘This is not what I want to do anymore,'” she said, reflecting on the moment she realized corporate fashion brands didn’t align with her values or creative vision.

Initially a side hustle while she worked full-time, Jam+Rico became a labor of love, drawing inspiration from her Jamaican and Puerto Rican heritage. She infused each jewelry piece with symbols and elements of Caribbean culture, from the nature of the islands to the vibrant energy of their traditions. This authenticity resonated with customers and led to her eventual leap into full-time entrepreneurship.

The pandemic was a pivotal moment in Lisette’s career. Forced to pivot from in-person events to online engagements, Jam+Rico thrived by connecting with customers through Instagram Lives and behind-the-scenes content. The move not only expanded her digital presence but also caught the attention of influencers and bloggers who amplified her story.

Lisette’s brand reached new heights when she launched a collaboration with iconic retailer Claire’s. The partnership allowed Lisette to bring her Caribbean-inspired designs to a wider audience, creating fun, cultural jewelry collections that paid homage to her roots.

“We were able to share the Caribbean story through jewelry in a way that felt authentic and fresh,” she said.

Looking ahead, Lisette is fearless about taking risks and sees a bright future for Jam+Rico.

“The sky’s the limit for me in many ways,” she says, reflecting on her drive to push boundaries and continue growing.

Her long-term vision includes more custom jewelry, including wedding bands and engagement rings, as well as building deeper connections with Caribbean artists and cultures.

With an eye toward expansion and cultural preservation, Lisette is determined to ensure Jam+Rico’s legacy reflects the richness of the Caribbean experience, providing a lasting connection to family, heritage, and artistry.

“Through craftsmanship—through artistry—we can share our stories,” she says, stressing the timeless nature of jewelry as a vessel for cultural expression.

As Jam+Rico continues to flourish, Lisette Scott remains a powerful example of how culture, creativity, and perseverance can turn a dream into a thriving business.
