A 31-year-old mother was shot and killed Monday morning outside her son’s school in Chicago’s South Loop in what police are calling a domestic-related incident.
The victim, identified by family as Romeca Meeks, had just dropped off her young son when the shooting occurred around 9:06 a.m. near 22nd Street and South State Street.
According to Chicago police, Meeks became involved in a physical altercation with a woman she knew.
During the fight, the suspect allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot Meeks in the face at close range.
Meeks was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The suspect, whose name has not been released, was taken into custody at the scene.
Authorities said the shooting appears to be connected to a personal dispute involving Meeks’ ex-partner and the suspect, who is reportedly in a relationship with him and is the mother of one of his other children.
Witnesses at the scene claimed the confrontation escalated after the man involved allegedly restrained Meeks.
Social media commentary also linked the conflict to the ongoing relationship tensions between the victim and the suspect.
Police confirmed that the case remains under active investigation by Area Three detectives.
