A 23-year-old mother in Connecticut, Devoni Miller, is facing charges, including murder, for the alleged intentional killing of her 2-year-old daughter in September.
According to court records reviewed by Law&Crime, Miller has been charged with a range of felonies, including first-degree reckless endangerment, interfering with an emergency call, reckless driving, evading responsibility in operations of other vehicles, and risk of injury to a child.
The tragic incident occurred on September 20 when Miller reportedly caused a collision in Cromwell, crashing into another vehicle and attempting to flee the scene. Subsequently, she allegedly struck another vehicle before crashing into a guardrail near the Connecticut River, approximately 50 feet from the water’s edge.
A female witness called 911 after Miller exited her car holding her baby, expressing concerns about authorities taking her back. Miller reportedly attempted to prevent the witness from making the call and grabbed her cellphone. Ignoring requests to check on the baby, Miller forced her way into another vehicle, where she continued her disruptive behavior, ultimately ending the 911 call.
Miller was later found walking along Route 9 without her child, wearing only underwear. When questioned by police, she claimed her child was “floating” and directed authorities to the river.
Miller made statements such as “just kill me” and “I’m not crazy, just a little depressed” during interactions with law enforcement.
Investigators learned that Miller had been sent home from work earlier that day for erratic behavior.
In the hospital, she allegedly told a witness that her child was “dead” and “in the water,” making references to the Bible and expressing paranoia about the police and demons.
Authorities located the child in the river approximately two hours after Miller’s arrest. A subsequent autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was drowning, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
