5 Things You Need To Know About The Respected College Dean Killed In Tragic Campus Shooting

by Gee NY

Dr. Cameisha Clark, a beloved educator and newly appointed dean at Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology in Inglewood, California, was fatally shot on campus last Friday, May 2, in a tragedy that has left her community shaken and heartbroken.

As authorities continue to investigate the attack allegedly carried out by a former campus security guard, many are remembering the 35-year-old for the vibrant life she lived, not the way it ended.

Here are five key things to know about the late Dr. Clark:

1. She was a rising leader in higher education
Dr. Cameisha Clark had recently been promoted to Dean of Student Affairs at Spartan College, where she was quickly earning a reputation for her compassionate leadership and unwavering support of students.

Her family described her as “a trailblazer and inspiration,” someone deeply committed to helping others reach their full potential.

2. She had deep roots in Atlanta and was a proud Clark Atlanta University alumna
A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Clark earned all three of her degrees—including her doctorate in education—from Clark Atlanta University. The university recently honored her in an “alumni spotlight” post on social media.

Her journey from student to national education leader inspired many, especially young Black women pursuing careers in academia.

3. She was fatally shot by a former security guard on campus.
On April 26, Clark and a colleague were shot inside an administrative building at Spartan College. Authorities say 40-year-old Jesse Figueroa, a former campus security guard with prior violent convictions, entered the building with a handgun and opened fire.

Clark succumbed to her injuries days later at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Figueroa has since been charged with murder, attempted murder, and multiple weapons violations.

4. Her legacy is one of joy, compassion, and fierce loyalty.
Clark’s family described her as “radiant, joyful, driven, and compassionate,” with a gift for uplifting everyone fortunate enough to cross her path.

She mentored countless students—from her alma mater to her current role—often believing in them long before they believed in themselves.

5. Her death has sparked an outpouring of grief—and calls to remember how she lived.
Though her life was tragically cut short, many have taken to social media and public vigils to honor Dr. Clark.

Her family asks that she be remembered not by the tragedy, but by the incredible life she led.

“Her legacy is defined not by the manner of her death,” they said, “but by the extraordinary way she lived.”
