A 7-year-old girl is being celebrated by her community after her quick thinking helped save her father’s life during a frightening emergency at home.

Young Mia Bates received the key to the village from officials in Village of Lynwood on Feb. 24, 2026, in recognition of her bravery after she calmly called 911 when her father collapsed.

According to local authorities, Mia’s father, Xavier Bates, suffered a serious fall in January while walking down the stairs, striking his head and losing consciousness immediately.

With her mother at work, Mia quickly reacted — calling emergency services, providing critical information to the dispatcher, and opening the door for paramedics when they arrived.

Village officials said her composure made a crucial difference.

“Her actions made all the difference,” the town said in a statement, praising her “bravery and quick thinking” during the emergency.

Community Recognition

Lynwood Mayor Jade Curry and local first responders are expected to honor Mia during a formal ceremony this week.

Fire Chief Lashaun Alston said dispatch records showed the young girl remained calm throughout the call.

“She was very calm and collected,” Alston told local media after reviewing the emergency notes.

Xavier Bates later confirmed he had no memory of the incident but credited his daughter’s fast response for ensuring he received timely medical care.

A Message of Courage

Speaking afterward, Mia encouraged other children to stay calm during emergencies.

“Be brave,” she said, explaining she knew her father needed to go to the hospital “so he could get better.”

Health experts note that teaching children how to recognize emergencies and call 911 can significantly improve survival outcomes in household accidents.

Community leaders say Mia’s story highlights how preparedness — even among young children — can save lives.
