On Tuesday, November 7th, Democrat mayoral candidate, Vi Lyles made history by becoming the first Black female Mayor of the city of Charlotte, North Carolina. Vi Lyles won the election by an impressive 58 percent of the vote, first beating out Jennifer Roberts in the Democratic primary in October and then blowing Republican candidate Kenny Smith out of the water in this weeks vote.

According to the Charlotte Observer, there was an overall turnout of 20 percent.

“With this opportunity you’ve given me, you’ve proven that we are a city of opportunity and inclusiveness,” Lyles told supporters at Park Expo off Independence Boulevard. “You’ve proven that a woman whose father didn’t graduate from high school can become this city’s first female African-American mayor.”

Lyles took to her Facebook account to further express her joy at her historic win and to thank her team and all of her supporters:

Her daughter, Aisha Alexander’s celebratory Tweet went viral this week. We feel you girl, we’re proud of her too!
