Authorities in Zanzibar have officially ruled that the death of American influencer Ashlee Jenae was a suicide, bringing a major development to a case that had drawn widespread attention across the United States and beyond.
According to police statements reported by The Citizen, officials have ruled out foul play following an investigation into the 31-year-old’s death while on vacation in Tanzania.

Police Detail Final Moments
North Unguja Police Commander Benedict Mapujira said the incident occurred on April 9, 2026, when Jenae allegedly attempted to take her own life inside her hotel room.
Authorities say she used a piece of cloth from her dress inside a wardrobe. Police confirmed she was still alive when the incident was first reported, after hotel staff raised concerns that she may have been suicidal.
“She was rescued and taken to the hospital,” Mapujira said, adding that she later died on April 10.
Disagreement Preceded Incident
Police also revealed that Jenae and her fiancé, Joe McCann, had a disagreement during the trip. As a result, hotel management separated the couple into different rooms prior to the incident.
“The woman had her own room, and the man had his own room,” Mapujira stated.
Body Remains in Tanzania
Authorities confirmed that Jenae’s body remains in Tanzania pending further examination, after which arrangements will be made to return her remains to the United States.
The couple had been staying at a luxury resort in Zanzibar, where Jenae had traveled to celebrate her birthday on April 5. Reports indicate the trip also included a surprise engagement.
Case Drew International Attention
Jenae’s death initially sparked intense speculation online, with family members and supporters questioning early reports and calling for a thorough investigation.
The police ruling is the first official confirmation of the cause of death, though reactions from her family have not yet been publicly updated following the announcement.
Ongoing Questions and Reactions
While Tanzanian authorities have closed the case as a suicide, the development is likely to continue generating discussion in the U.S., where the story gained traction across social media and news platforms.
As more details emerge, attention now turns to the repatriation process and whether Jenae’s family will seek independent examinations or further review of the findings.
