At just 27 years old, Pelumi Nubi has already made an indelible mark on the world, having traveled to 77 countries across six continents.
However, her latest achievement is perhaps her most groundbreaking yet. On January 24, Nubi embarked on a journey that would solidify her as the first Black woman to travel solo from London to Lagos by road, covering a staggering distance of over 10,000 kilometers (6,200 miles) in her trusty purple Peugeot 107.
After two months of traversing various terrains and overcoming numerous challenges, Nubi arrived at the University of Lagos on April 7 to a vibrant celebration in her honor.
The festivities, which lasted the entire day, culminated in Nubi being named the brand ambassador of tourism in Lagos state by the Governor, who also presented her with a new car and home.
Speaking about her remarkable journey, Nubi told OkayAfrica that her desire to inspire other Black women to embark on solo travel adventures.
“Easy, safe, and doable,” she remarked, revealing that she’s determined to demonstrate that travel can be accessible to everyone, regardless of their background.
Despite encountering difficulties along the way, including a harrowing accident in Ivory Coast that damaged her car, Nubi remained undeterred in her pursuit of her goal.
“I might do Lagos to South Africa next,” she mused, highlighting her relentless spirit of adventure.
During the Instagram Live conversation with OkayAfrica, Nubi reflected on her incredible experience traveling through 16 countries from London to Lagos.
She shared insights into her inspiration for the journey, the challenges she faced, and the unexpected moments of warmth and hospitality she encountered along the way.
“Lack of freedom of movement, and difficulty navigating cross-border movements was one of – if not – the toughest bit of my journey. Too much bureaucracy, bribery, corruption. But I’m looking forward to some policy changes. It’s something I’m hoping to speak more about now that I’m back home,” she disclosed.
When asked about her biggest setback, Nubi candidly spoke about the accident and the bureaucratic hurdles she encountered at border crossings within Africa. However, she remains hopeful that her journey will shed light on the need for policy changes to facilitate easier cross-border travel on the continent.
Looking ahead, Nubi expressed her excitement about revisiting countries like Senegal, The Gambia, and Sierra Leone, where she hopes to continue exploring their rich cultures and cuisines.
And as for her growing community of supporters, Nubi had a powerful message:
“There is nothing that’s impossible, and there is nothing you can’t do.”
