In a significant development two decades after the tragic murder of 15-year-old Elena Lasswell, Phoenix Police have arrested Sergio Francisco Reyes, 37, following his extradition from Mexico.
Reyes faces charges including sexual assault and first-degree murder, among others, stemming from the July 10, 2004 incident.
Lasswell was found fatally injured inside her Phoenix home, setting off an extensive investigation that initially yielded no suspects. However, advancements in DNA technology in 2012 provided a breakthrough, linking Reyes to the crime scene. Despite fleeing to Mexico, Reyes was indicted by a Maricopa County Grand Jury in 2014.
“This arrest is a crucial step towards justice for Elena Lasswell and her family,” remarked Phoenix Police Detective Dominick Roestenberg in a social media statement. “After two decades, we are relieved to see progress in this case.”
The extradition process, supported by U.S. Marshals, concluded with Reyes’ return to face charges in Maricopa County Jail. For Lasswell’s family, who have endured years of uncertainty, the arrest offers a measure of closure.
Katie Tourville, Lasswell’s aunt, expressed gratitude to law enforcement for their perseverance.
“It’s been a long journey, but we finally have hope that justice will be served,” she told Fox 10 Phoenix.
The community continues to support Lasswell’s memory as legal proceedings move forward, marking a pivotal moment in the pursuit of justice.
