Ashley T. Johnson Becomes First Black Woman Appointed to Lead St. Louis FBI Field Office

Ashley T. Johnson has made history as the first Black woman to lead the St. Louis FBI Field Office.

Director Christopher Wray announced her appointment in a press release on Sept. 9, 2024. Johnson’s journey with the FBI began in 2007, after earning degrees in criminal justice, sociology, and social work.

Before this groundbreaking promotion, she served as section chief in the FBI’s International Operations Division.

Johnson’s leadership has been marked by extensive experience tackling civil rights violations, corruption, domestic terrorism, and cyber threats.

Starting her career in the New Orleans division, Johnson initially focused on civil rights and white-collar crimes. Her leadership skills quickly earned her a role in the FBI’s Cyber Division, where she oversaw national investigations across five field offices.

This experience paved the way for her transition to the Atlanta division in 2013, where she supervised law enforcement corruption cases and domestic terrorism threats in Georgia.

Johnson was later promoted to assistant special agent in charge of the Atlanta division’s criminal branch, where she founded the Atlanta Development and Leadership Council, which promoted mentorship, leadership development, and training opportunities.

In her new role, Johnson continues to break barriers and inspire future generations of women and minority leaders in law enforcement.

Her appointment is not just a personal achievement but also a significant moment for the FBI in promoting diversity and representation at the highest levels.
