Rapper Flo Milli addressed the issue of colorism within the entertainment industry during a recent appearance on Yung Miami’s “Caresha Please” podcast.

The “Conceited” rapper reflected on how the perception of her as “underrated” due to her darker skin tone initially triggered her.

Flo Milli got real about tackling issues of race, self-acceptance, and the double standards that exist within the music industry.

At around the 17-minute mark in the interview, Yung Miami raised the issue of Flo Milli being perceived as “underrated,” attributing this to societal biases against darker-skinned women. The Alabama-born rapper responded with grace, explaining how such narratives while triggering, serve as a reflection of the systemic colorism ingrained in society. “They made us think our skin color was an issue, and that taught our people to make it an issue,” she said.

Reflecting on her rise to fame, Flo Milli acknowledged the challenges she’s faced as a dark-skinned woman in the entertainment industry. Despite the hurdles, she emphasized her accomplishments as a testament to resilience.

“It’s different for me to digest because I feel like I’ve made it so far, and coming from where I come from, where I am now is an accomplishment. It was kind of triggering to get on the internet and be ridiculed for that.”

The interview also touched on comparisons between Flo Milli’s career and the meteoric rise of fellow rapper Ice Spice.

Fans have often speculated that Flo Milli’s deeper complexion could shed light on the stark differences in visibility and mainstream recognition among artists. Take Ice Spice, for instance: her breakout viral hit “Munch (Feelin’ U)” skyrocketed her to fame in 2023, earning her accolades from icons like Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift. On the flip side, Flo Milli’s ascent has been more gradual, even though her talent and artistry are simply undeniable.

However, Flo Milli firmly dismissed these comparisons as “tired a** narratives,” instead choosing to celebrate her individuality and authenticity. “I’m here because I belong here,” she asserted, redirecting the focus to her craft and her dedication to creating music.
