Janet Jackson will not appear in the new Michael, and the reason is straightforward. According to her sister, La Toya Jackson, the global superstar was invited to be portrayed in the film but chose to pass.

The Antoine Fuqua-directed biopic, which arrives in theaters this week, brings several members of the Jackson family to the big screen as it traces Michael Jackson’s life and legacy. Despite the film’s wide family involvement, Janet’s absence stands out. Speaking at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on April 20, La Toya explained that her sister was approached about participating but “kindly declined,” adding that her decision should be respected.

Janet, 59, has not publicly addressed her decision and was not present at the premiere, where multiple members of the Jackson family gathered, including her brothers Jackie, Marlon, Randy, and Jermaine. While on the carpet, La Toya shared that she wished the entire family had been included in the project.

Director Antoine Fuqua also addressed Janet’s absence, expressing respect for her decision while noting her support for the project’s lead. The film stars Jaafar Jackson, the son of Jermaine Jackson, who takes on the role of his late uncle. Fuqua emphasized that Janet’s support for Jaafar remains meaningful.

The biopic, written by John Logan, explores Michael Jackson’s journey from his early days signing with Motown Records in 1969 as part of the Jackson 5 to his rise as a defining force in global music. The cast also includes Nia Long and Colman Domingo as Michael’s parents, Katherine and Joe Jackson, alongside Miles Teller as John Branca and Laura Harrier as Suzanne de Passe.

Michael Jackson, who died in 2009 at the age of 50, remains central to the film’s narrative, which focuses on his evolution from a child star to the global icon widely known as the King of Pop.

Janet’s decision not to be portrayed adds a notable dimension to the project, even as the film moves forward with the support of much of the Jackson family.
