Woman Loses $4,000 in Alleged Online Travel Agency Scam Involving Egypt Trip: ‘I Just Want My Money Back’

A Bowie, Maryland woman says she’s out nearly $4,000 after booking an overseas vacation with an online travel agency that never happened, and she believes she’s not the only victim.

Michelle Griffin told 7News she paid for an October 2024 trip to Egypt through FlyGirl World Travel LLC, owned by Letitia Douglas. Griffin said she made payments over the course of a year, completing the balance in November 2023.

Months before the trip, she claims the business stopped communicating.

“When I tried to contact her in June about our flights, she stopped responding,” Griffin said. She alleges that after repeated attempts, Douglas eventually sent a letter stating her business had closed.

According to Griffin, she learned through social media and a TikTok video that other customers were facing similar problems. The Better Business Bureau (BBB), which says the agency is not accredited, reports six complaints and has given the business an “F” rating.

Griffin contacted her credit union, the Education Systems Federal Credit Union, to request a refund but was told the 90-day dispute window had passed. Police took her statement and told her the case was referred to Chicago authorities, where another investigation into the company was already underway.

The Maryland Attorney General’s Office confirmed it is aware of the complaint. At the same time, Prince George’s County Police say they have received one report of alleged fraud related to the agency but are monitoring for additional victims.

The accusations against FlyGirl World Travel LLC include accepting payments, canceling trips without notifying customers, and failing to issue refunds. Griffin says the ordeal has left her reluctant to use travel agents in the future.

“$4,000 is $4,000,” Griffin said. “I’m an educator. I just want my money back.”
