South Sudanese-American supermodel Anok Yai snagged the Model of the Year award at the 2025 British Fashion Awards, marking her as a significant force in global fashion. While her stunning gown certainly turned heads, it was her heartfelt message that truly resonated with little Black girls everywhere.
On December 1st, at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall, the 27-year-old took center stage. After years of working hard and watching this moment slip away, she finally seized it and made sure to lift the next generation with her words.
She spoke directly to her young audience: “To all my little Black girls who are watching me right now. Your colour is not a curse. You are not a trend, you are not unfortunate. You are worthy, you are capable, and you are more powerful than you can imagine.”
Anok also took a moment to urge peace in Sudan and in her homeland, South Sudan, effectively tying her global influence back to her roots.
Her journey is nothing short of remarkable and highlights the importance of representation. Born in Egypt after her parents fled the turmoil in Sudan, she moved to the U.S. when she was just three years old.
Her life changed dramatically in 2017 when a spontaneous photo of her taken at a university event went viral, rocketing her into the spotlight. The following year, she made history by becoming the first Black Model to open a Prada show since the legendary Naomi Campbell back in 1999.
Arriving on the blue carpet in a statement-making custom ivory gown by acclaimed Turkish designer Dilara Findikoglu, she epitomized modern elegance and glamour. Known for her striking beauty and graceful walk, winning Model of the Year cements Anok Yai’s status as more than just a model; she’s become a symbol of progress.
