Nicki Minaj made one of the most unexpected celebrity appearances of the week when she popped up at SpaceX’s Starship Flight 12 launch event at the company’s Starbase facility in Texas, instantly sending social media into overdrive.
What started as a highly anticipated rocket launch quickly became a trending pop culture moment when the rapper appeared during the livestream and publicly praised Elon Musk to viewers around the world.
The “Starships” rapper joined the live webcast on May 21 and used her brief appearance to thank Musk directly while encouraging her fans, known as the Barbz, to continue supporting future SpaceX launches. “Elon, thank you for everything you are doing for humanity,” Nicki Minaj said during the stream. “Major shoutout to Elon.”
Her cameo immediately became one of the most talked-about moments of the broadcast, with clips circulating online within minutes. Musk himself leaned into the viral moment by reposting a video of Nicki’s appearance on X and writing, “Welcome to Starbase, @NICKIMINAJ.”
For many fans, the appearance seemed random at first glance, but followers of both Nicki and Elon know the two have quietly exchanged public support for each other over the past several months. Their online interactions first started gaining attention back in November 2025 when Nicki reposted a video of Elon discussing optimism, inspiration, and the importance of building a future people feel excited about.
In the clip, Elon said, “There needs to be things that inspire you, that make you glad to wake up in the morning and be part of humanity.” Nicki reposted the video and added, “Speak Elon, we’re listening.”
Their social media exchanges picked up again earlier this year when Nicki appeared to reference Elon while discussing neurodivergence online. In a March post on X, she wrote, “Neurodivergents watching our leader Elon be the richest & smartest while the others realize they’re cooked.” The comment sparked plenty of conversation online, with fans debating whether the rapper was subtly opening up about herself while praising Elon at the same time.
The connection between the two public figures has also fueled discussions because of their political associations. Elon Musk previously served as head of the Department of Government Efficiency, also known as DOGE, while Nicki Minaj has publicly voiced support for Donald Trump and his administration in recent years. At one point, she even shared an AI-generated image featuring herself alongside Trump, which added to conversations about her political views online.
Still, Thursday’s SpaceX appearance marked the first time Minaj and Musk’s growing public friendship played out in such a visible setting.
