In Jamaica, law enforcement has launched an investigation into the death of Melissa Silvera, the spouse of former People’s National Party Member of Parliament, Jolyan Silvera.
Initial reports suggested that Melissa passed away in her sleep on Nov. 10, but a recent post-mortem revealed that she had been shot at least three times.
The police are now conducting an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding her death.
The revelation has raised questions about the responding officers who allegedly missed signs of violence on Melissa’s body at the scene.
The incident has drawn attention due to the tragic history of the Silvera family, as their son, Justin, passed away in 2017 after slipping and drowning in the family’s pool in Stony Hill, St Andrew.
Jolyan Silvera’s attorney, Peter Champagnie, released a statement urging the public not to jump to conclusions about his client.
The statement emphasized that Silvera is cooperating with the police and is not considered a suspect in the ongoing investigation.
“While I appreciate the need for transparency in so far as the public’s interest is concerned in this most unfortunate situation, I would urge caution upon those who would want to go beyond the boundaries of facts on social media,” the statement noted, according to the Atlanta Black Star. “The police investigation must be allowed to proceed without any prejudice to anyone.”
This incident follows another recent tragedy involving a People’s National Party Member of Parliament.
In October, a U.S. Navy officer was charged with capital murder and kidnapping in connection with the death of Phillip Paulwell’s 10-month-old daughter and the child’s mother, Toshyna Patterson.
The funeral for the family was held in Portmore, St. Catherine, on Sunday.
