Da Brat is expected to give birth any moment from now, and she has finally come out to address backlash she says she faced about the sperm donor she chose when she decided to carry a child.
In a recent interview with The Root, the 49-year-old said she and her wife Jessica Dupart wanted a Black sperm donor but the pool of candidates were slim so they chose a white donor instead. After making the comments, she appeared on the Tamron Hall Show to clear up what she meant.
“That [dude] looked like Jiminy Cricket,” Brat said in an episode of the reality show. Brat Loves Judy. “I was like, ‘I’m sorry but that wasn’t gonna be my choice.’ … But I think we did a great job with picking. He’s handsome, he’s tall, and I think he’s going to look beautiful with my wife’s egg.”
Her comments caused many to express disdain for her comment, believing that she rejected a Black donor because of genetic preference.
“I didn’t think it would be offensive to anybody,” the rapper said about the “Jiminy Cricket” comment. “I cracked jokes about almost everybody that I saw, that one just happened to make it in the show. I wasn’t trying to be mean or say anything negative about Black people. We were looking for a Black donor. We’re Black, we wanted a Black donor. So it was just misconstrued and taken way out of context.”
She added, “I had no idea people were going to be so offended, but I meant no harm whatsoever. We wanted a Black donor—I was just like, ‘What?’ People take things and run with it. … People who know me know that I didn’t mean any harm. So if I offended anybody, I do apologize. But it was a joke between me and my wife and the doctor, we joke like that, we play around, so it wasn’t meant to be offensive in any way.”
It was exciting news when the Chicago rapper announced she was expecting their first bundle of joy, but since then, rumors have swirled that the Funkdafied entertainer did not inform her sister LisaRaye McCoy of the news. According to reports, McCoy found out how the rest of the world did: online.
But Dupart refuted those claims, although a resurfaced clip of an interview featuring The Player’s Club actress suggests otherwise.
During an It’s Tricky podcast episode with host Raquel Harper, the Chicago native shared that she wasn’t aware her younger sister, born Shawntae Harris-Dupart, was having a baby. At the time, the married couple shared an Instagram post suggesting that they were expecting.
She continued: “I did see the reveal of them expecting and expanding their family and I didn’t know anything about it as well. I do realize that when people grow up … even in this situation when you find a partner, you find a good thing and you’re supposed to cling to that partner. I get that. But it’s supposed to be also a bonus. It’s supposed to be an add-on, not a subtraction.”
McCoy and Da Brat have had their share of sister woes in the past. In 2020, Da Brat surprised McCoy on Cocktails with Queens, a FOX SOUL online talk show series featuring co-hosts, McCoy, Vivica A. Fox, Syleena Johnson and Claudia Jordan. In one episode, McCoy became emotional after sharing she “felt hurt” about the distance between her and her sibling.
“Punk, you know how much I love you. You know how much you mean to me,” Da Brat said. “You know since I was a child you’ve always been there. You always gave me good advice.”
