Director Dawn Porter Brings Luther Vandross to Life in New Documentary: ‘Luther: Never Too Much’

by Gee NY

Renowned director Dawn Porter takes center stage with her latest project, the documentary Luther: Never Too Much, which chronicles the life and career of the late R&B legend Luther Vandross.

Released in partnership with CNN Films, this compelling film captures Vandross’s incredible journey, showcasing not only his timeless music but also his influence as a producer for icons like Aretha Franklin and his work on memorable jingles for brands like Burger King and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Porter’s vision for the documentary transcends a mere tribute; she aimed to create a film that resonates with both Vandross’s longtime fans and those unfamiliar with his legacy.

“I did not want to stuff it with people saying how great he was,” Porter explained. “I always envisioned that this would reach people who had never heard of him as well.”

With an impressive array of archival footage at her disposal, including rehearsal tapes and electronic press kits from Vandross’s record label, Porter skillfully allows the singer to narrate his own story.

“Those archives were really gold because they allowed me to let him tell his stories so much,” she noted.

The film also delicately addresses the subject of Vandross’s sexuality, a topic shrouded in speculation. Porter reflects on how audiences were often more curious about his personal life than judgmental, noting:

“With Luther, you always had the sense that people didn’t really care; they just wanted to know.”

Dawn Porter is no stranger to impactful storytelling, having previously directed acclaimed documentaries such as John Lewis: Good Trouble and The Lady Bird Diaries.

Her nuanced approach shines through in Luther: Never Too Much, which not only celebrates Vandross’s artistry but also deepens the audience’s appreciation for the dedication behind his seemingly effortless performances.

Luther: Never Too Much is currently showing in select theaters and will premiere on CNN, OWN, and Max in the coming year.
