DMX’s Ex-Wife Tashera Simmons Reflects on Late Star’s Costly Business Decisions: ‘We Were Close to Being Billionaires’

by Gee NY

Tashera Simmons, the ex-wife of the late DMX, is shedding light on the financial highs and lows that shaped the rap icon’s career.

She revealed in a recent interview that the hip-hop icon missed opportunities that could have secured him billionaire status.

During the interview, Tashera recounted DMX’s immense earnings, recalling that at one point, the couple’s bank accounts were overflowing.

“Man, I remember looking at our bank accounts and the zeros wouldn’t stop,” she said. “He made $10 million a movie—that wasn’t even counting his shows. He made millions just doing a show.”

However, despite his unmatched success, a series of poor financial decisions and extravagant spending habits prevented DMX from reaching his full economic potential.

Turning Down the Barclays Center Investment

One of the biggest what-ifs in DMX’s financial history was his decision to turn down an investment in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, an opportunity presented to him alongside Jay-Z.

“I never forget it,” Tashera recalled. “They called him and said, ‘Jay is in, and they wanna know if you wanna put in a million dollars to get in.’”

Despite the obvious long-term value, DMX dismissed the deal, something Tashera believes could have drastically altered his financial trajectory.

“Unfortunately, when we don’t have real business sense, we don’t always see the bigger picture. X didn’t see that as a good investment… And now look,” she added.

A Heart Bigger Than His Wallet

Beyond business missteps, Tashera revealed that DMX was extremely generous, often putting others before his financial stability.

“He spent a lot of money taking care of everybody,” she explained on the podcast. “Somebody died? He’d pay the whole funeral. We’d go on vacation and rent out the entire hotel—spending over $150,000 a day.”

Legacy Beyond the Bank Account

While DMX never reached billionaire status, his impact on music and culture remains immeasurable. Tashera emphasized that despite the financial pitfalls, his legacy as an artist, performer, and humanitarian endures.

“He was great, and he made a huge impact,” she reflected.

DMX’s raw talent, generosity, and influence, however, continue to resonate today.
