Benedict College, a historically Black college in South Carolina, has announced the extension of Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis’ contract as the institution’s first female president.

Dr. Artis, who took on the role in 2017, will continue her leadership through June 2031, marking a significant milestone in the college’s history.

Dr. Artis’ tenure has been marked by significant achievements, including the completion of the college’s ambitious five-year strategic plan, known as The B.E.S.T., in just three years.

As she continues to guide the institution, her focus now shifts to implementing the B2 plan, which aims to propel Benedict College toward even greater growth and success.

In a letter to the college community, Dr. Artis highlighted the distinctive legacy and mission of Benedict College, emphasizing its commitment to serving a diverse population.

“For more than 152 years, Benedict has served culturally, academically, financially, demographically, racially, and socially diverse people,” she wrote.

The B2 strategic plan, spanning 2023-2028 and titled Focus on the F.U.T.U.R.E., envisions a comprehensive approach to building a more inclusive campus, enhancing student engagement, and ensuring academic programs equip students with the tools for future success.

The plan also outlines initiatives to upgrade campus facilities and resources.

Founded in 1870 by Bathsheba A. Benedict, the college remains deeply connected to its legacy as a woman-founded institution while embracing a new era of growth.

The chairman of Benedict’s Board of Trustees, Charlie W. Johnson, expressed pride in Dr. Artis’ leadership, stating,

“We are exceptionally proud and fortunate to have such a strong leader guiding the College to higher heights and through the numerous challenges facing higher education institutions today. President Artis is keenly aware of the current issues students face, and she has demonstrated a deep commitment to providing students with formative learning experiences that prepare them to lead and succeed professionally and personally.”

With this contract extension, Dr. Artis reaffirms her commitment to advancing Benedict College’s mission and solidifying its place among leading HBCUs.
