The murder of a fourth-year university student in Ghana has sparked widespread anger, with many questioning security lapses on campus.

Joana Deladem Yabani, a Biological Sciences student at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), was found dead with bruises near the university’s Disability and Rehabilitation Centre in the early hours of Feb. 27, 2025.

Authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause of death, but her boyfriend and roommate, Daniel Tuffour, has been taken into custody as the primary suspect.

According to Ghanaian media, university security discovered her body and transported it to the University Health Services, where medical personnel confirmed her death.

The case has triggered outrage on social media, with many pointing out that the crime occurred close to a campus police station, raising concerns about student safety.

KNUST’s management has issued a statement (image below) expressing condolences to Yabani’s family and assuring the university community of their commitment to campus security.

They have urged students and the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information.

Students and faculty are calling for stricter security measures and justice for Yabani.
