In one of the most dramatic upsets of the season, Haitian-American tennis star Hailey Baptiste delivered a career-defining performance by defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka at the Madrid Open, saving six match points in a stunning comeback.

Baptiste, ranked No. 32 in the world, rallied from a set down to secure a 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (6) victory on Tuesday, marking her first-ever win over a top-five opponent.

The 24-year-old’s resilience under pressure not only shocked the tennis world but also ended Sabalenka’s 15-match winning streak. Sabalenka had entered the tournament as the defending champion and heavy favorite.

The match reached a boiling point in the निर्णцfinal set, where Baptiste faced six separate match points. Demonstrating remarkable composure, she saved each one before edging out Sabalenka in a tense tiebreak.

The victory places Baptiste in her first-ever WTA 1000 semifinal, signaling a major breakthrough moment in her career and elevating her status among the sport’s rising contenders.

Sabalenka, reflecting on the loss, acknowledged both players’ high level of performance but pointed to missed opportunities in the decisive set.

“It was a tough match. She played great. I played great,” Sabalenka said. “I had some opportunities in the third set… sometimes you have to learn and move on.”

Baptiste’s win also carries historical weight. She becomes the first player to defeat Sabalenka after saving match points since Iga Swiatek accomplished the feat in the 2024 Madrid final.

Looking ahead, Baptiste will face Mirra Andreeva, the tournament’s No. 8 seed, who advanced to her first Madrid semifinal with a straight-sets victory over Leylah Fernandez.

The upset underscores the increasing competitiveness on the women’s tour, where emerging talents continue to challenge established champions on the sport’s biggest stages.
