A 48-year-old childfree woman, Dominique Baker, offered her candid views about Black women’s autonomy in a now-viral Instagram video.
In the video, Baker described attending an event with older Black women, whom she referred to as “true aunties.” She noted that the first question she was asked was whether she had children, followed by “why not” and inquiries about her mother’s opinion.
Baker explained that these questions point to a common societal expectation that Black women must prioritize motherhood over personal goals.
“I don’t care what anybody thinks about my decision,” Baker said. “All I know is that I saw the struggle my mom went through raising three kids, and I knew that I had to put myself first if I wanted to achieve my goals.”

Baker reflected on the importance of choice, stressing that Black women can pursue their dreams without guilt.
“They forget that they can make a choice. They can fulfill their dreams. They can put themselves first, and they’re not a horrible person for doing that,” she said.
She concluded by sharing her personal satisfaction with her life path.
“I look at my life, and I’m so happy with it. I don’t regret one thing. I know in my heart of hearts that I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish so much if I had chosen to be a young mom. For me, my choice was the best one for me,” she added.
Baker’s post, captioned “Sometimes, the Aunties forget that Black women have a choice,” has resonated widely, prompting discussion about societal pressures, reproductive freedom, and the importance of prioritizing personal goals.
