One-third of the legendary trio Destiny’s Child is receiving praise for how she responded when a HOT 97 host compared her to Beyoncé.

In an interview with Peter Rosenberg on Ebro In the Morning earlier this week, Kelly Rowland sat down with actress Marsai Martin to discuss her new film, Fantasy Football. The conversation delved into a wide array of topics, including a moment when Rosenberg recounted an interview Rowland had with Angie Martinez. In the interview with the Power 105.1 host, Rowland talked about her relationship with Beyoncé.

“Angie gave you flowers for your ability to play second to Beyoncé which… I can only speak for me, everyone gets into the entertainment business to be “the man”, right? It does take an ego check,” Rosenberg commented. “You happen to be standing next to the brightest light on planet Earth. You think Big Boi from Outkast has it tough being next to Andre, you’re with Beyoncé and not only did you not have to fight it, like you really loved the position you were in and took it seriously.”

In a classy response, Rowland said: “Here’s the thing. Light attracts light. I am light. I am a beautiful, brown, shining light.

She continued: “People only see things one-sided so I don’t like when they just put one person in one place, like, we shine together. It’s always been like patriarchy to me.”

She went on to applaud her bandmate who she said has “knocked down doors and made positions for so many women that look like her, that are a deeper shade than her but specifically for Black women and put Black women in other places that we’re grateful for.”

Since the interview took place, Rosenberg apologized to fans, stating: “Lol i did get it. I hated my question …clumsy and stupid … dropped her a line to apologize for how it came off.”

Rowland’s fans jumped to her defense on Twitter, with one user tweeting “Kelly called him out to his face & he still didn’t get it. Even, Marsai Martin caught it. Outside of Destiny’s Child, Thee Kelly Rowland is an international superstar, actress, author & businesswoman! She’s been in this industry 25+ years & in 2022 you’re still comparing?”

“There is SO much that can be discussed with Kelly Rowland without mentioning Beyoncé. It’s so tiring at this point,” wrote another.

“Kelly Rowland is a grown woman with her own career, her own accolades, and her own dreams. Pls stop asking her about Beyoncé every time you talk to her.”

“I want hosts to find another angle when interviewing Kelly Rowland. We’ve witnessed the ‘second fiddle to Beyoncé’ storyline for decades and it’s honestly redundant and highlights a lack of creativity when approaching interviews with someone over 20 years deep into their career.”

Fantasy Football will hit theaters November 25, 2022 and stars Marsai Martin, Omari Hardwick, Kelly Rowland and Rome Flynn.
